"The biggest mistake…is ignoring my gut. That intuitive feeling is so powerful and can so easily be overlooked or drowned out." — Julia Hartz

Julia Hartz ON Mistakes

President & Co-founder, Eventbrite

Q: It is a common saying that we learn more from our mistakes than from our successes. Can you share a story about a time when you experienced a mistake, and how you eventually came out a winner because of the lesson it taught you?

A: The biggest mistake I’ve made to-date in growing Eventbrite is ignoring my gut. That intuitive feeling is so powerful and can so easily be overlooked or drowned out by doubts, persuasion, and others’ opinions. I’ve become almost religious about always expressing my gut feeling and being strong about following my intuition. READ MORE »

Q: It is a common saying that we learn more from our mistakes than from our successes. Can you share a story about a time when you experienced a mistake, and how you eventually came out a winner because of the lesson it taught you?

A: Unfortunately, I have had more than my share of “mistakes” to single one out. I like to think every one I have made has helped bring me to a deeper level of understanding of others and myself. A: Early on I auditioned for a couple of yoga jobs. At one the guy had us in a group interview and immediately took a dislike to me, which was strange - almost as if he had mistaken me for someone else. It was evident to everyone. He was openly critical and unpleasant to me. Immediately after, it had been arranged ... READ MORE »

Q: It is a common saying that we learn more from our mistakes than from our successes. Can you share a story about a time when you experienced a mistake, and how you eventually came out a winner because of the lesson it taught you?

A: We’ve been lucky as a company—there have not been disastrous mistakes. This is because we have resisted the urge to diversify. We didn’t expand into an array of hair-care, we didn’t expand into a full color cosmetics line, although some very smart people who worked for the brand really pushed me to do this. We didn’t ever create a fragrance ... READ MORE »
