Sackler First Awards
April 18, 2012, Over 600 art world luminaries ventured to the Brooklyn Museum to honor Elizabeth A. Sackler (recipient of the Augustus Graham Medal) and artists Martha Rosler, Amy Sillman and Mickalene thomas (recipients of the Asher B. Durand Award) at the Brooklyn Artists Ball.
Celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Sackler Center for Feminist Art, the awards, cocktails and ball raised funds to benefit the Museum’s education, exhibition and outreach programs.
A night to honor women who are firsts in their fields, the event was buzzing with the women’s empowerment that ClaudiaChan.com thrives on. Weeks later we are still basking in the inspiring words of incredible women like Toni Morrison and the chills-inducing rendition of “This Little Light of Mine” by Jessye Norman. Not to worry for those of you who missed out–here are a few of our favorite moments:
“Sisterhood doesn’t work without helping your sisters.” – Connie Chung
Gloria Steinem surprised with a rose in her honor– charming and very well deserved!
“Women Firsts must commit to not being the last.” – Johnnette B. Cole
Words from Muriel Siebert, the first woman to secure a seat in the U.S. Stock Exchange, reminding us that it wasn’t long ago that banks wouldn’t loan to women. Progress!
